Description

Myrovolos Greek Polei Mint, 25g

Polei mint as a medicinal plant

The pungent and spicy tasting Poleiminze with its violet flowers looks very similar to the normal peppermint, but is smaller. The smell is pleasant, sometimes even pungent and minty.

The pole mint contains a poison, the Pulegon. Therefore, this mint can only be used for internal purposes with caution. The Poleiminze occurs almost in whole Europe, but has become very rare, therefore it is protected in some countries and is on the red list.

The herb (dried parts above ground) of the pole mint (Herba Pulegii) is used for medicinal purposes. Similar to peppermint, it is mainly used for digestive complaints (dyspeptic complaints) as well as biliary and liver diseases.  The essential oil with Pulegon (strong mint-like smell) as main component, as well as Menthon, Isomenthon and various tannins, was used popularly as menstruation-promoting means; abusively also as Abortivum.

Other abortive plants are e.g. parsley (apiol), rain fern, tree of life (thuja), nutmeg, cinnamon bark or clove.

The oil obtained by steam distillation has an irritating effect on the skin and mucous membranes. After oral administration, the urinary tract and genital system are irritated during excretion, hence the effect described above.

Accordingly, Polei mint must not be used during pregnancy and lactation. In continuous use, liver damage is one of the risks. Polei mint is also used to flavor oral care products.
